To mark its twentieth anniversary, the Al-Afif Cultural Foundation released on Tuesday its culture program for 2009 during a ceremony attended by Minster of Culture Dr. Mohammed al-Maflehi and Minster of Technical and Professional Education Dr. Ibrahem Omar.
The ceremony began with the opening of an exhibition of plastic and abstract art from artists Waheba al-Ra’adi and Sarah al-Samaiy. Next, Mr. Ahmed al-Sharabi, the cultural activities head at the Al-Afif Culture Foundation presented an opening speech explaining how the Al-Afif Foundation has spent the last twenty-years sponsoring a vast array of literary creations.
Then a documentary movie was shown to the audience about the life story of Mr. Ahmed Jaber Afif, and how he cared for the foundation with his formal and informal works. The documentary showed the foundation and its location in a three floor building which includes a large library containing more than seven thousand books, and its publishing house of sixty books including The Yemeni Encyclopedia. During the documentary, some employees at the foundation talked about the foundations activities, including Mr. Wael al- Sharafi the accountant, and Ms. Faten al-Hababi.
Executive manger Mr. Abdul-Bary Taher said that the principles of the Foundation from its very first day in 1989 was the spread of the country’s heritage, to express Yemeni creativity and motivate the coming generations of Yemeni’s.
The foundation explained that it also sought to reward the creativity of youth, and to this end Mr. Ahmed Jaber Afif has established a yearly award in the name of “Al-Afif” to be given for the human & applied sciences.
Next, Minster of Culture Dr. Mohammed al-Maflehi confirmed that the continuation and improvements to the foundation reflected the seriousness of the administration, which stands behind this special cultural project which covers various kinds of cultural activities.
Minster of Technical and Professional Education Dr. Ibrahem Omar mentioned the important role played by Al-Afif Computer and Languages Institute, and the focus of the culture program for the year 2009. Next, poet Al-Hareth Ben al-Fudl presented his new poem about Gaza- criticizing Egyptian attitudes towards the war.
At the end of the evening, singer Jaber Ali Ahmed sang two songs which were followed by a ceremony honoring the students of the Al-Afif Computer and Languages Institute.
