Sana’a hosted an array of cultural activities related to poetry this week to mark the occasion of World Poetry Day, March 21.
The day’s events started at the Yemeni Center for Studies and Research with a poetry reading session of collections from a number of Yemeni Poets. The event was headed by Dr. Abdul-Aziz al-Maqaleh the Cultural Adviser for the Yemeni President, the aim is to bring poetry to a wider audience through the broadcasting of the event.
Al-Maqaleh said the event was originally scheduled to be held in a public place, such as, the Bab al-Yemen, but organizers agreed to televise the event in order for it to reach a greater audience.
Al-Maqaleh thanked the TV channels for broadcasting the event, which gave millions of viewers the chance to hear poetry, which remains the homeland of humanity and spirit, he said.
The event was attended by the Minister of Communication, Hassan al-Lawzi, who talked about the importance of such cultural events and invited poets to take advantage of this remarkable occasion, as the event provides an opportunity to communicate with their compatriots.
Following on from the poetry reading, a second event was held at the al-Afif Cultural Foundation last Tuesday where the poets Sawsan al-Ariqi and Ahmed al-Salami organized an evening poetry reading.
The experienced poets took the audience through a number of their poems performing their readings in an energetic and modern style. The event was run by fellow poet Dr. Ibtisam al-Mutawakell and attended by a wide audience.
Yemeni Poetry House also celebrated last Wednesday at the Culture House (Bait al-Thagafah). The event commenced with an activity round of the poet Ahmed al-Awadhi under the title "Innovation is a great poet quality" concluded by this the activity round of the poet Mohammed Abdul-Salam. Throughout the event an honoring ceremony was held to celebrate a number of Yemeni poets.
Activities also took place outside Sana’a when Al-Bardony Cultural Association in Thamar governorate also hosted an evening of poetry presented by a selection of young poets.
Each participant contributed a selection of works, some celebrated pain and grief, others talked about Palestine and Jerusalem, while others gave examples of poetic creativity presented in a variety of styles.
Another popular poetic theme for the evening was the mother, as the event fell on the same day as Mother’s day. The event attracted a large audience and was attended by the Director of the Yemeni Cultural Center in Cairo, the well-known journalist Khalid Amr.
