A consultation session has been held to discuss strategies to help save the Yemeni Folklore House. The session was held at the Women’s Media Forum (WMF) last Tuesday, in the presence of Rahma Hugiara, the head of the (WMF) and Arwa Othman, the director of the Yemeni Folklore House.
The session was held to discuss the terrible situation of the Yemeni Folklore House, and to consider how those concerned with its fate could help turn the situation around said Rahma Hugiara, who added that next Monday there will be a press conference on the matter.
Head of the Yemeni Folklore House Arwa Othman, said her primary concern is the acquisition of proper housing, which will allow her to keep and maintain all the valued objects of Yemeni folklore, many of which have been collected over the past twenty years. In their present housing, they are the targets of corrosion and damage by mites and mice, especially the traditional clothes, old furniture and pictures, she said.
She confirmed the necessary of a new house, because the current Yemeni Folklore house is very old and small; Othman also told the session that there was a garbage dump behind the house which reflects negatively on Yemen’s state of tourism for those that visit the place.
She added, with regret, that the Japanese Embassy had offered her $90 000 in equipment, but the offer had to be withdrawn because the current house was too small to accommodate the equipment.
Othman seemed very disappointed by the governments’ actions to date regarding the country’s folklore, although she expressed her hope at captivating the Local Councils’ attention, through her open discussion of the huge problems currently faced by the Yemeni Folklore House.
