The violations against children by their parents, or as a result of tradition, were some of the themes discussed in the first collection of stories by 18 year-old Yemeni author Kawther Abdulwahid al-Sharifi.
Her newly released book, Painting for the Sky comprises twenty one short stories, which are presented with a mix of tragedy, comedy, and drama.
Al-Sharifi’s writing is becoming increasingly recognized, both for her stories, and for her work as an online writer for several culture websites. Recently, she won second prize at a literary festival in Damascus for her story Soil’ Rain.
Readers were shocked by her young age and agreed that the collection of stories’ showed a great maturity and development in her writing style, not just in the stories themselves but also in the notes at the end of some of the works.
The collection focused on the Palestinian issue, and showed the young writer’s sympathy for the Palestinian issue. She transmitted through her stories deep and compassionate emotions, her language was strong and highly developed. Although she allowed her readers to glide in her prose and forget all about the story. Yet, the success of her latest collection will undoubtedly incite calls for her next book.
Well-known journalist Abdul Bari Atwan, the Editor in Chief of the Al-Quds newspaper, wrote that he was pleased with the smooth style of al-Sharifi, who showed a very promising talent in Arabic literature. He added “I have read the text sent to me and I liked it a lot, it has been a pleasant surprise for me.”
